1853: First woman pastor
Antoinette Brown

Antoinette Brown breaks the precedent that only men can lead the church.

Antoinette Brown is ordained as the first woman pastor in the United States, by the Congregational church in South Butler, New York - forebears of the United Church of Christ.

At her ordination a friend, Methodist minister Luther Lee, defends "a woman's right to preach the Gospel." He quotes the New Testament: "There is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a union of four principal traditions: Congregational, Christian, Evangelical, and Reformed. Each of these traditions has left a mark on U.S. religious and political history, often in the lead on issues of peace, justice and equality.
